It was in the shop for a toasted transmission. Fresh clutch and a new, Subaru rebuilt transmission. The bill was $2,064. Really not as bad as I imagined it would be. Drives like new and shifts smooth as butter. I was having a shit day until my Secret Senna arrived and I got my car back. I'm a happy man.

I've never had a repair like that, so I have no experience with the cost. But it seems reasonable, and you've got your car back. Congrats.

my old suby, 99 lgt wagon, broke its transmission and the repair bill was going to be something insane like 5-6k. 2k sounds like a deal!

Definitely a reasonable price, IMO. The shop was great!

The guys told me they were looking around for transmissions and a new one would have been north of 4 grand. They got lucky stumbling upon the Subaru rebuilt one! Definitely dodged a bullet there haha

Making a long story short, I had a leaking main seal on my Odyssey right before we were to drive from TX to VA for Thanksgiving. Transmission shop quoted $800, dealership quoted $1600. But after talking to the dealership, and since other repairs they did may have contributed to blowing the seal, the dealership offered to do it for $400. Definite win, and finally a nice story about a dealership.

Whoa, that dealership really came through for you. I've had a surprising amount of luck with my local Subie dealership besides one time my sister brought her Fozzie in for service. Good dealerships are hard to come by, so hold on when you find a good one haha

They really did. I've developed a pretty good relationship with my service writer there. He knows that I'm not the typical Honda, "I don't care what it costs just fix it" customer. But it also helps to have enough knowledge to ask good questions and understand exactly what they want to do. While they didn't admit that they definitely caused the leak, I think the price they offered was sort of a tacit admission of at least partial culpability. They did a valve adjustment, and the tech said that the adjustment may cause increased oil pressure. The seal already had 130k miles on it, so it was probably due to fail anyway. So we both won. I didn't have to pay all that much, it got a "factory" repair, and they have my goodwill and return business.

Mileage? Did Subaru kick in any money?

That's not bad, I haven't killed any of my subarus transmissions yet, but I've had to do solenoids twice. Your outback looks good though, enjoy the newish tranny.

I didn't go to the dealer to get it fixed actually but that's where I go when I can't do something on the car! I went to M.T. Schiele for the work this time. Really great shop if you need anything done.

That makes more sense - I had wondered if it was an early failure.

Congrats on getting her back...and the bill did not make me say ouch as much as I'd thought it would.
